About the Artist

Seeing through the eyes of an artist, the lens of a camera, the mind of a patient explorer, and working with the hands of a master craftsman, Gan Barber is often up before dawn to capture first light on the mists, waters, forests, and meadows of the surrounding countryside. And just as often, he is ensconced in his studio late at night perfecting his masterful prints.

Coming from a background in the pre-digital darkroom, Gan brings in-depth knowledge of Ansel Adam's techniques to his current working process. Beginning with a constant awareness of light, and open to the mysterious and often fleeting magic of nature, he puts himself in the right place at the right time to capture the extraordinary beauty around us. His knowledge of the camera blends with a sensitive eye, capturing moments that are here and often gone in a few breaths.

And from there, the magic continues. Taking the detailed, complex images he has captured into the studio, he continues to refine and clarify their beauty, and then takes everything a step further with his printing processes.

Color prints are carefully calibrated, matching archival pigments to 100% cotton papers. Monochrome prints are created with as many as seven hand-mixed dilutions of carbon pigment ink, also printed on 100% cotton rag paper. Each print is crafted to express the presence of light and texture with materials designed for longevity.

A print from Gan Barber's eyes, camera, hands, and studio is indeed a work of art, reminding us of the magic we have all experienced...or longed for...during a quiet moment in nature.
